Gail Wilson PaperDolls

Historical Paper Doll Series
The Fashion Doll ~ 6" Display Size
Kit

This larger 6" version of the doll size paper doll set started out as simply a display model to sell the tiny size while at shows - in the photo the larger size is in front with the tiny size in the background. But everyone wanted it too. It does not come with all of the clothing and packaging of the small set because it is just for display in your dollmaking area or sitting on a shelf of a bookcase. The dolls in this series of paper dolls are based on the original artwork of Gail Wilson and the historical dolls which have inspired her. This simple kit comes with instructions and supplies to assemble this double-sided and wooden backed paper doll with her wooden stand. Two copies oif the doll are included in case of mistakes.

Display Size Kit was $14.95, now on clearance sale for $10.00. Add to Cart

TINY FASHION PAPER DOLL (In the top picture, she is shown up in back of the bigger Display size sold above)
These were the first in a series of tiny paper dolls. This one is my Fashion Doll and is 2-1/2" in her wooden stand. The dolls and clothing have fronts and backs and the dolls themselves are laminated onto wooden backings cut exactly to their shapes. Tiny envelopes come with them to hold their three outfits and accessories plus there is a tiny box to hold all. Although meant to be display items with the clothing left uncut, outfits will fit if cut out. Instructions included and kit has all supplies.

Hitty's Printed Cats to make yourself - Buy in "Bulk" (Packages of 12 Printed Cats)

A perfect accessory for Hitty is this very tiny (1.5" tall) printed cloth cat taken from an antique unsewn cat by the Arnold Printworks Patented 1892. These printed cats and other animals and dolls were very popular for the home sewer who was to sew up and stuff these printed treasures for playthings long ago. GW has reworked the original artwork for this very easy kit or a delightful addition finished for your Hitty.

Found a full yards long printing of these tiny cats that we have sold both finished and in kits. What you will get is a row of parts to make 12 cats, plus the instructions and cardboard for inside the base. We have overdyed all for you.

• Kits to make one cat are usually $18. This offer to get 12 cats is on sale for $18 while they last. SOLD

A 10" IZANNAH WALKER INSPIRED DOLL KIT WITH WARDROBE
A fine addition to my doll kits and a wonderful doll to collect and sew for. This doll is a scaled down version who in her original size of 18" was sculpted by me carefully by measurements and shape templates from a real 21" Izannah, so she is pretty true (well, I do admit to making her more subtle ears than Izannah did). Her head is molded papier mache with a cloth body stuffed with wool. Included are special painting instructions for either wispy side curls or her signature sausage curls. Although the painting is somewhat tricky, I have simplified the methods with the help of recommended special tools so that really is not that much more than any other painted doll. Of course, I also offer pre-painting of the head as I do with all my other molded dolls. Her patterns for her wardrobe include her pantalets and camisole, petticoat, 2 dress styles, 2 aprons, her hooded cape, a hard constructed and a cloth bonnet plus her own folk cat (an accessory she is often depicted with) and a pocket. Included in the kit are also very special cotton knit and optional instructions for doing the knit-over technique if you choose.
• 10" Izannah Walker Inspired Doll Kit with Wardrobe Set of Patterns ~ Old price was $125, now on sale for $94 - See New Offer Below

NEW OFFER:
All of the last of these last kits (7) will be offered with GW pre-painted molded heads. Sale price of kits without GW painting was $94 and with painting, would be $269. New sale price for Painted Heads in Kits is now $195 ALL SOLD

18" IZANNAH WALKER INSPIRED DOLL KIT

This is a molded head Izannah Walker inspired doll made from months of study of a real (and quite wonderful) 21" antique Izannah Walker from the collection of my old friend and well-known dollmaker, R John Wright. From my studies, I sculpted the head you see here plus used it in scaled down versions for my many smaller Izannahs. The molded papier mache head is covered in special cotton knit, like the originals, with a cloth body intended to be stuffed with wool. Patterns include her basic wardrobe: petticoat, pantalets, dress, apron and bonnet, plus an alternate boys outfit. The making of this kit was due in part to fill a need for dollmakers to make a nice version of a pretty true Izannah look without having to sculpt a doll by themselves. Cloth body fabric, special knit for head and paints provided plus undies fabric, leather for shoes, knit for stockings and all notions. You provide wool stuffing (about 8 oz) and outer garments fabrics. (8 available).
Price of the kit was $175, now on sale for $132 ALL SOLD

• Pre-paintingby GW for your doll kit's head: I am no longer able to offer pre-painting of the sausage curl style due to time constraints, but I still will do one of the styles Izannah used which has always been my favorite - I call it the double wispy style. (This is the fee for painting only and sale discount does not apply). Double Wispy Curls $245 Add to Cart

THE BASIC DOLL (and her 3" Doll's Doll) KIT
The Early American Doll Series was based on this "basic doll". It was to begin with a basic doll - a doll that was simple and affordable, but not plain and I wanted her appealing to the heart. Her construction is taken from humble cloth dolls, but she becomes a little more defined with her delicate joints and painted surface, which is another old-time technique. She has a mohair wig and is stuffed with real wool. Her jointed arms and legs are weighted so she will sit well. She comes, and I like her best, in her camisole and pantaloons, but then there is clothing to add and accessories as well. She even has her own doll (which comes with her in the kit). I have tried to make the kits as fool-proof as possible with silkscreened sewing lines, premeasured stuffing amounts and stencils for face detail. Patterns are also included for future bodies or you can order additional silkscreens. Her 3" doll's doll is included in the kit but sold separately if purchased finished. The Basic Doll kit will come with a free Dress and Pinafore Pattern which includes dresses for both the Basic Doll and her 3" Doll's Doll.

THE LADIES HOME SEWING COMPANION - A PINCUSHION DOLL
A doll sewing caddy/pincushion taken from antique ones (the concept), a cookie cutter woman I love from an antique collection (the outline) and antique paper doll styles of the late 1800's (the underwear look). Body outlines, hair and face designs are silkscreened on to body fabric, but you can use the paper patterns included to make more dolls. There is not much machine work as most of the doll is finished by hand. Her arms will be drawn and sewn from the arm pattern and her skirt is stuffed to become part of her whole figure. The apron, which has a pocket for small scissors, and her bodice are appliqued on. The needle keeper (shaped like an old-fashioned pocket once worn around the waists to hold various everyday sundries, especially sewing tools); and the strawberry emery hang from her waist. Her broad hips become the pincushion. All of her features and hair are simple and relaxing embroidery. Under everything are wood forms to define her shape and give her standing presence. Her oval wooden base has two spool spindles fitted out with old-style wooden spools which you wind with thread for display or you can use the spindles for your own actual sewing threads. If you wish to make more and do not have or wish to purchase the additional wooden parts or silkscreened bodies, you can use the included patterns to make your own. She is intended to be solidly stuffed with wool (the best pincushion stuffing), but you can use wool for upper parts down to below hips and other stuffing for lower skirt.

PRIMITIVE ANIMALS: MY FINISHED SAMPLES AND PATTERNS TO MAKE THEM
I have a small collection of antique primitive cloth animals, but because they are rare, I only have a few - two dogs, two cats, a lamb and one questionable species (dog or rabbit) and a fabulous horse. There is something so straight-to-the-heart about these sweet playthings, often sewn from old coating or other scraps and stuffed with rags or sawdust. Like primitive dolls whose shapes are often pared down to the essentials (keeping in mind that most of these dear things were not made with patterns), it is this naive look that appeals. Most often one finds them in old dirty whites or browns as these coarser weaves were common, so most of mine will also be in these grungy tones. The patterns will inspire you to make them in many types of fabrics, one more endearing than the next. The animals are divided up into two patterns.

A PAPER PIECED HEX PINCUSHION PATTERN

I have always been drawn to hex quilts and my Hitty customers will know I have included hex quilts in Hitty scale for years. Recently I saw some made in canning jar lids, but not content with that because I wanted more color expression that using my older sewing-pincushion top box idea, that would be just my style. So here is a new pincushion kit, really easy to do with nearly all handwork with the hexes supplied in the kit printed on reusable freezer paper. Pincushions are stuffed with wool (also in the kit) and all is over a foundation of a round paper box, included. The kit only has one fabric combination as shown, but to inspire you to see the possibilities to use your own scraps, I made up 6 more for the picture (click on image at right) .(7 available)

DOLL'S SEWIES FOR ACCESSORIES KIT (scaled for dolls) ~ These items come as a very sweet and fun kit for small dolls or items can be ordered finished. Early American ladies spent much time on their needlework which was often kept in their pockets (a pouch that hung from their waists). This is a set of working miniature brass scissors and a set of patterns for a tiny scissors case, flat tomato pincushion and a strawberry emery. All items are well under an inch and easy to make from your silk (or cotton) scraps. They are nice to hang from doll's apron waist on a silk ribbon.

17" QUILTED CLOTH SANTA - Original Description
This painted cloth-faced Santa shows off his quilted and pieced robe on a uniquely constructed body that allows him to stand by himself, through a special technique of weighting his feet. His wonderful presence is created by the layers of clothing and the many fabrics that go into his robe. Easy 4-patch quilt construction is used to create the "fabric" for his robe. A few options are included for accessories as well. This pattern can provide many many looks from vintage country to Victorian by just altering the fabric choices.

PENNY RUG 18" SANTA MINI KIT OR PATTERN
This larger Santa makes a bold statement and the work to get him there is very relaxing hand work if you have ever done or admired the penny rug style. You can start with any old wools (not synthetics, although small amounts of nylon added to the wool content are fine) using light solid colors and small scraps of checks, tweeds and plaids. Their original colors (if not too dark) will be easily taken over by the easy dye process you can do right on your stove with Rit dyes and the recipes included in the instructions. For example, once while teaching, everyone wanted the mustard color of my Santa above and the shop owner had yards of a pastel pink and a pastel blue. I had my doubts, but tried anyhow, and magic! You could no longer tell which were formerly pink and which were baby blue. The work of Penny Rug style is basically an applique of wool pieces using a decorative embroidery stitch to apply the cut wool designs. Wool sews like a dream especially since the dyeing process slightly felts the wool.

PENNY RUG SANTA MINI KIT (Includes Patterns and Instructions, wooden base, bearding, paints, wire armatures) - you supply body fabric (3/4 yd of Kona cotton recommended, wools and stuffingInstructions have easy dye recipes you can do yourself for all his wool). STRAW BONNET MAKINGS

In the photo you see the straw bonnet I made for my 12" Izannah Collector Series. For my tiny and smaller scale dolls I have used linen mesh and molds to form them on. But for this series I wanted real straw bonnets. In order to learn how, I purchased a mold for a 12" French Fashion Doll to practise on and the straw braid in the narrowest width to make my own straw hats. Once I got the basic idea (which is easy once you have the mold shape to make them on), I set about making several molds. What I am selling here is the mold and instructions for both the purchased 12" French Fashion Doll and my own mold for the bonnet you see in the photo. You will have fun making real straw bonnets from this set. Many yards of several braids - enough to make quite a few bonnets. More braid can be found in an internet search because it is fairly common for people hats too. $78 for all. SOLD

ODDS AND ENDS OF LEFTOVER LACES

If one is in the business of dollmaking, there is no end of the need for laces of all sorts. Opposite are laces found in hoeing out. Too combersome to make links for all, so follow steps below to order. These represent the very finest laces to be found. Many are imported from France and very expensive - the prices shown for 5 yard pieces are a fraction of the prices I paid. All do well with my paint overdye for a more antique look. Wider ones were used as aprons for tiny dolls or as parts of Queen Anne outfits.

Examples of the Windowpane Dimity used on a 12" doll (left) and a Tiny 3" doll (right).

FABULOUS IMPORTED SWISS DIMITY FABRIC

This fabric was one of those rare finds that made my heart jump for joy. I only used it on special finished dolls due to its high cost at $54/yard. Over the years I would buy chunks whenever I felt I could afford to buy it in advance. It comes white, but my paint overdye was used to do off-whites to a more aged look. It has wonderful drape, is all cotton and only the quality the Swiss are noted for. There were two types in the line of this fabric - one was the windowpane version and one was a stripe. Windowpane squares are about 1/4" and stripes are about 1/4" apart. I was surprised to find the following chunks at the bottom of a large storage box containing specialty fabrics, so I need to find good homes. Selling these uncut amounts at $18/yd (remember, they were $54/yd ten and more years ago). Add to Cart

MOHAIR FOR DOLL HAIR - This is a smooth but not the silky more realistic kind known as "English" mohair and therefore best for cloth dolls. It is slightly woolier than the English, but much easier to work with. You can see it here in auburn on a Basic Doll and it was also used for Lotties and many of my angels.

SPECIAL OFFER - I have a huge supply of the Auburn and Brown roving from the old days of many kits having it included in the kit supplies, and need to clear out some. 5 yard bags $10.95. REDUCED MORE TO $8.95. And again to $5.95
Auburn (shown) SOLD OUT
Brown Sold Out

NOTE - NEWLY ADDED: We have so much of the auburn roving that my grandchildren will inherit it if I don't sell it. Like the gray roving below, it could be used for stuffing, though it is a top grade roving usually too good for mere stuffing. It should be used in bodies that are darker fabrics or where there will be a painted surface (so it doesn't show through) - great for bears!. Priced to go, but there will need to be a $3 shipping surcharge due to weight. Selling in 2 pound bags for $15 SOLD OUT
HINT: I hung some of this in our trees for birds to line nests with.

PURE WOOL STUFFING
The very best stuffing of all and worth the price for all-natural. If you use this with stuffing forks, you will have the best chance at good doll stuffing - the hardest part of dollmaking. Most helpful for smooth surfaces on doll heads and nice smooth legs and arms. The best for beginners too. Can even be dyed for doll hair. (The cost of wool is high, however, it is still the best stuffing and in relation to the amount of work put into a doll, worth every penny. This is not the place to skimp.).

After selling and promoting wool roving as the very best stuffing for early style doll bodies for so many years, I am now fully sold out. But I will share with you a great source. It took me years to ferret out good sources of large quantities. Prices can vary a lot depending on the year and abundance or lack of. None of the bulk sources used to be available online, but times have changed. For stuffing, I recommend domestic top. This has a somewhat coarser and springier fiber that is good for filling. Look up R.H.Lindsay Co or rhlindsaywool.com.

MY FAVORITE WHITE POLY STUFFING (IF YOU NEED TO USE POLY)
This is the best white poly. This used to be called "Super Fluff" and now is named Mountain Mist, but made by same Buffalo Batt and Felt Company. Stays put and is not slippery or lumpy. Has the best effect closest to firm vintage stuffed dolls and my only choice when not using wool roving.
