SEWING ACCESSORIES FOR DOLLS
1-1/2" Stork Scissors - $14 each (all sold)
1-1/2" Chatelaine - $18 each (all sold)
3/4" Charm Scissors (pkg of 60) - Many years ago, I bought a small box of tiny brass scissors at the end of a trade show. Even though it was a tiny box, it had several hundred of these tiny scissors, which, all totalled made a seemingly heavy and dense box. At the airport, this little box caused an enormous gathering of security and I was briskly led away and later made to open the box myself while guards stood back in case the bomb they thought it was went off. The end of the story was a lot of laughter at the airport (long before 911). Fast forward many years later after the huge number of tiny scissors had run out, I tried to find more. The search was fruitless and the closest I came was this lot of 60 sew-on charms. I never used them because they did not pass muster for my purposes, but would be good for a scrap booker or other melange type craft.

FOUND - 2 LAST OF THE SMALL SIZE PRINTED CAT (2.5" size - lower right in photo)
These printed cats were taken from an antique unsewn cat by the Arnold Printworks Patented 1892. These printed cats and other animals and dolls were very popular for the home sewer who was to sew up and stuff these printed treasures for playthings long ago. GW has reworked the original artwork for each of the four sizes. All sizes were made finished and ready for gifts or doll accessories. The two smallest sizes are also available as kits.

KINDRED SPIRITS DOLL
This 9" doll was made exclusively for the 2016 UFDC Convention held in Washington DC - an edition of 110 and included her illustrated book explaining my interpretation of the theme of the convention, Kindred Spirits (a portion of the insides of the book is included below). She is my own original and comes with her chair.
Originally $695 (not including chair), now $395 with her chair and book. SOLD
From inside her book:
What I have learned from studying antique dolls has been illuminating in my understanding of my own dollmaking. It has taught me how the spirit in a doll comes to be and why some dolls have it and some don’t. This realization has to do with how much the things around us become our point of reference and influence our perception and our creativity if we happen to create things like dolls. This is what I learned which is especially true of cloth dolls, which are, in fact, often the type which become the most beloved: Today we have pictures all around us. As we eat breakfast, there are pictures on the cereal box; we have books and magazines, billboards, movies, TV and, of course, the internet. But imagine a time when all there was were the basic tools for life - books being costly and rare at best and very little education for most, especially for the people who sewed or made wooden dolls in early times. Unless you were a natural artist, how to draw the human form was a real problem with nothing for a pictorial reference. Sewing was most certainly an ordinary skill, but most could not draw nor draft a pattern. So that what we have today is a collection of true spirits that came to life in the simple expression of these dolls and often because of someone’s love for a child and the wisdom and patience to see the need and carry out such a basic thing as a doll. And the essence of that spirit is what makes charm and a true heart in a doll (of any sort) whether it is today or a hundred years ago. This is how I have always made my dolls. |

THE PRAIRIE DOLLS - This was a ltd edition of 12 which were all sold. But as I continue to sort through the several hundred boxes each representing a doll or kit from my 50+ years, much to my amazement I found all of the many items that made up this set retained as samples to go by. All that was lacking was the dolls themselves. These so represent my best work that I am keeping the first prototypes for my own forever.
THEIR STORY: My first 9" molded papier mache doll, Louisa, who started the many dolls I have made from this favorite mold (my own original). Following Louisa, there were others: Elizabeth, the Christmas Girl, Kindred Spirits (UFDC), Annabelle, three dolls from the Secret Garden (UFDC), and last was the 1950's Doll - A Self Portrait of Me in First Grade (1956), also for UFDC. This last doll came out with the Covid outbreak and although she was made, her companion, which was going to be a school girl from about the 1850's, was never made due to conventions being canceled that year.
From that never made doll came the inspiration for two sisters inspired by Laura and Mary Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie. One with brown hair and one blonde with complementary outfits and different added accessories. And although I had firm designs in my head for how they would look, including their accessories, I was only vaguely admitting to myself the immensity of the task of finding amongs existing fabrics, about 12 different prints which would all "go" together and most importantly, make my heart feel the feeling of "just right". This proved to be one of the greatest challenges ever. Once all the details were worked out, the School Girl with brown hair has her slate, lunch pail and Primer while the Sewing Girl has her real cross stitched sampler in its wooden hoop along with her strawberry pincushion and her sewing pocket with brass scissors. Both dolls have lace trimmed undies and real leather button boots and both come on their wooden stands.
As noted above, I still have to paint the doll parts and assemble, wig and dress the dolls.
Delivery will be end February. They were origianlly $1400 for the set, this last set is on sale for $1200. If you click to buy, a $250 deposit will be taken until I am ready to ship.
