TINY DOLL
NO. TWELVE (2013)
AN HISTORICAL COLUMBIAN DOLL
For the 12th doll, I chose one of the classic historic cloth
dolls in the spirit of the many dolls made by Emma and Marietta Adams
who began making dolls in Oswego, New York in the 1890’s. Many
people become confused about the name “Columbian” as
it refers to these dolls, but the name came about as a result of
a doll, now known as Miss Columbia (now living at the Wenham Museum
in Wenham, Massachusetts), who won, in 1893, an award from the Columbian
Exposition of the Chicago’s World Fair. Columbia is the female
personification of the United States, so her name is quite fitting
indeed. My tiny version will painted to look like these well-known
cottage industry play dolls and dressed in one of the common styles
we still see on well-preserved samples in many museums with a fine
batiste pinafore over soft hand-dyed blue dress and painted mary jane shoes. In 3/2021 a bonnet was added.
